The Number 10: Summer Cocktails
Share
Backyard grill parties, barbeque cookouts and campfires by the lake – these social gatherings just wouldn’t be the same without good friends, good food and a few good drinks, of course. We’ve put together this list of delicious, easy-to-make summer cocktails to add some excitement (and just a little hydration) to your next celebration in the sun:
1. White Sangria
Combine one bottle of white wine into a pitcher with fruits (apples, lemon, lime), ½ litre ginger ale and 2 oz brandy (optional, for extra punch). Leave the concoction chilled overnight and add just a little more ginger ale before serving to refresh the taste. Feel free to also get adventurous by adding more juicy elements – anything from raspberries, strawberries, pineapple, peaches or mango.
This cocktail is a crowd-favourite, and notorious for going down the pipes ever-so-easily! To make, muddle 10 fresh mint leaves and ½ lime cut into wedges in a glass. Muddle once more adding two more wedges and 2 tbsp white sugar. Fill the glass full with ice, 1 ½ oz white rum and top with club soda!
3. Michelada
Mexico’s “beertail” will leave your friends talking for days about your latest backyard grill-out, long after the lawn chairs have been put away. It’s a great taste pairing for meats, from steak to burgers. Add ¼ tsp of salt and a few dashes of lemon juice, Tabasco sauce and soy sauce into a glass over ice. Fill the glass up halfway with Clamato juice, and the rest of the way with frosty beer.
4. French 75
The French 75 is the perfect antidote for a hot spell in the sun! Combine 2 oz gin, 1 tsp simple syrup and ½ oz lemon juice in a shaker. Pour over ice into the glass, then fill the rest of the way with champagne.
5. Pimm’s Cup
Discovered in the 18th century, this long drink is still popular amongst bar masters today for its low alcohol content and complex taste. So why not introduce it at your next garden party? Muddle cucumber slices and lemon wedges in a glass. Add ice, 2 oz Pimm’s No. 1 and fill the rest of the glass with lemon-lime soda (like Sprite or 7Up) or ginger ale.
6. Moscow Mule
This summer cocktail calls for 2 oz vodka, 1 oz lime juice and ginger beer to the top of the glass. While some like to garnish with a cucumber slice or lime wedge, you’ll find that this drink is delightfully refreshing and aesthetically-pleasing simply on its own!
7. Bubblegum Martini
This martini is the perfect alternative to cosmopolitans for the next ladies night or splurge party. Combine ¼ cup whipping cream, ¼ oz milk, 2 oz bubble gum vodka and ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and garnish with candy or sprinkles when feeling sweet!
This creamy colada cocktail isn’t anything like the banana-flavoured medicine your mother used to give you! Combine ½ oz vodka, ¾ oz banana liquer and ¾ oz crème de cacao in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. If you want to get fancy, serve garnished with a decorative banana slice over the rim of the glass.
9. Cucumber Cooler
This cocktail kicks the classic gin and tonic up a notch by showcasing a little something from the vegetable section. In a glass filled with ice, pour in 2 oz gin, 8 tbsp lime juice and fresh cucumber slices. Top the rest of the way with tonic water and few lime wedges for extra flavour!
10. Hugo
This cocktail, born and raised in Germany, is perfect for sipping on any balcony. Muddle mint leaves in the bottom of a glass to release the flavour. Add ice cubes, 2 oz elderflower syrup, 2 oz sparkling water and the rest of the glass with Prosecco or sparkling wine.
