These Are 6 Of The World's Most Incredible Caves

There are a lot of interesting, beautiful, incredible places on Earth to visit above ground, but you might be surprised at how many amazing, beautiful, incredible places exist below ground! If you’re not claustrophobic, you should consider visiting one of these 6 incredible caves!

1. The Blue Grotto, Italy

The Blue Grotto is a coastal sea cave on the island of Capri, Italy. It’s called the Blue Grotto because the inside of the cave appears to be lit by a blue light. The light source from under the cave is responsible for this blue appearance. The only other light source is a small hole that is accessed from the outside by rowboat. It’s a bit eerie, but also strikingly beautiful!

2. Carlsbad Caverns, United States

One of the most famous caves in the United States, Carlsbad Caverns is an underground cave located in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. Upwards of 41 million people per year visit this limestone rock cave. The cave contains the 7th largest cave chamber in the world. The “Big Room” measures 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide and 225 feet high at its highest point.

3. Waitomo Glow worms Cave, New Zealand

What makes this cave so interesting are the arachna luminosa, or glow worms, that inhabit the cave. As larvae, the glow worms spin a web similar to a spider’s web on the ceiling of the cave. They then hang down from the web by a thread they weave and emit a glow to attract insects. Since they number in the thousands, it appears as if there are thousands of stars on the ceiling of the cave. It’s quite an amazing, beautiful sight!

The Škocjan Cave is not only one of the most significant caves in Slovenia, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 due to its historic and cultural importance, its diverse ecosystem and perfect example of karst (limestone erosion). It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful caves in the world.

5. Mammoth Cave, United States

I think this wonderful cave deserves one more visit before I leave the bluegrass state in a few months. Mammoth Cave boasts the single largest known cave system in the world. Currently it is estimated that there is 400 miles of explored cave with an unknown amount unexplored. Hopefully when I do make it back I can bring a tripod with me to get some cleaner photos (look at that ISO)! . . Mammoth Cave is the largest cave system in the world. It measures over 203 miles of caverns and tunnels. It’s famous for the Frozen Niagara, Grand Avenue and Fat Man’s Misery attractions. There are several tours of the cave, including a “wild caving” tour that allows visitors to venture into the less developed parts of the cave.

6. Reed Flute Cave, China

The Reed Flute Cave near the city of Guilin is an estimated 180 million years old. It contains writing on the walls that has been dated back to the Tang Dynasty, 792 AD. It is famous for its many unusual rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. The cave had been lost for centuries, but was rediscovered in the 1940s by a group of refugees who were fleeing Japanese troops.
