10 Weird Reasons Why Trees Are Our Best Friends

It should be no surprise that we love trees. That's why we plant 10 trees for every item sold in our store! And what's not to like? But trees are good for a lot more than their shade and their fall colors. There are a lot of reasons to love trees!

They keep our homes clean.

Weird, right? It turns out, according to a study from Lancaster University, that trees planted along roadways reduce the amount of particulate pollution, like the kind cars emit, end up in our homes. In some places, there's a 50% reduction!

They clean up after us.

Trees are like a dedicated mother cleaning up after her slovenly children. According to the U.S. Forest Service, trees are responsible for removing about a third of the carbon emissions from fossil fuels emitted annually. Thanks mom trees!

Trees provide shelter.

Around the world, three hundred million people live in forests, and another billion and a half rely on them for their livelihoods. Forests also provide homes for an enormous number of flora and fauna alike.

They keep cities cool.

Climate change poses unique challenges, and one of them is warming cities. Trees planted in urban areas help reduce the average temperature by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit by shading us and releasing water vapor into the air through their leaves.

Trees protect our water.

It seems counterintuitive, but trees actually protect watersheds across North America by providing water drank by more than 180 million people.

Trees fight crime.

A tree might not stop a murder, but some pettier crimes can be halted by trees. Outdoor spaces that contain lots of trees have less graffiti, are less likely to be vandalized, and have less of a problem with litter.

Trees pay their way.

It turns out, every dollar that's spent on planting trees in a city pays us back five times over. They pay us back by cleaning the air, lowering our energy costs, and improving water quality all while increasing property values.

Trees are humble.

There are more than 23,000 kinds of trees, and worldwide, there are three trillion trees! And even though we're always chopping them down, they just hang out and do what trees do. Trees are such nice people.

Trees put your mind at ease.

Green spaces are important for the human spirit. Workplaces and homes that lack green spaces, filled with grasses, shrubs, and trees, tend to create additional stress on those who live and work. Trees actually calm us and make us happier people!
