The weather is starting to warm up. Camping season is upon us! Finding a place to camp in Alberta isn't much of a challenge. The province is famous for its sky-scraping mountains and azure blue lakes. And with five large national parks, Alberta is home for any camping enthusiast.
Something to keep in mind, however, is that from park to park, the rules vary. Some parks have check-in times like a hotel. Others prohibit fires at certain times of year. Check with Alberta Parks before you settle on camping plans. These are our 10 favorite places to camp in Alberta.
1. Waterton Lakes National Park
Waterton Lakes National Park is on this list because of the wide variety of hiking trails. There's something for everyone here, whether you're a mountain climber or enjoy ambling, level trails. There are 135 camping sites with services and 24 sites ideal for back-country camping.
2. Kananaskis Country
Kananaskis country is the embodiment of everything Alberta has to offer all in one place. There are beautiful peaks, clear, picturesque lakes, and valleys of evergreen trees. Car camping and back-country camping are your options here. 10 different sites are available.
3. Sheep River Provincial Park
Sheep River Provincial Park is the go-to for fishers and bikers especially. There are four major camping sites and lots of places to go fishing, as well as numerous mountain biking trails. Hiking trails are present in this park as well. This is an ideal park for larger camping groups as well.
4. Kinbrook Island Provincial Park
Kinbrook Island is the place to be if you enjoy water. There's only one major camp site on the island, but it's a must if you enjoy sailing, bird-watching, or swimming.
5. Bow Valley Provincial Park
In Bow Valley Provincial Park, there are a number of back-country camping spots and 5 managed camping grounds. This park is an awesome place for rock climbing and wind surfing. If you're not ready to rough it yet, it's a great park to visit for a day trip.
6. Willmore Wilderness Park
This park is great because of its accessibility for novice outdoorspeople. It's located near the town of Grande Cache, making it easy to plan as you go. The park features stunning peaks, lots of wildlife, and 750km of easy-going woodland hiking trails. Back country camping is available.
7. Wood Buffalo National Park
Wood Buffalo National Park is Canada's largest park, making it an ideal spot to go if you really want to get away from people and the noise of civilization. There are beaches to swim and hiking trails to enjoy. There are some sites in a camp ground but the best spots are going to be back-country camping sites.
8. Dinosaur Provincial Park
So far, all of the places on this list have been lush and evergreen in nature. Dinosaur Provincial Park is something a little different. Located southeast of Calgary, this park features dryer climates. There are lots of walking and hiking trails and you can even go paddling down Red Deer River. There are 94 maintained camp sites and 30 back country spots. Lots to choose from.
9. Elk Island National Park
Located near Edmonton, Elk Island National Park is a great place to go if viewing wildlife is your pleasure. It's not uncommon to see bison roaming about here. It's also a great place for kayaking and canoeing. There are camp sites for RVs as well as rough back country sites.
10. Banff National Park
What list would this be if we didn't suggest Banff National Park? It's the quintessential Canadian national park. Explore the Canadian rockies with hiking, rafting, and mountain biking. There are almost 2500 camp sites in Banff making it one of the more popular places to pitch a tent.
